Artist Statement
Nuttakritta Khotsombut (b. 1995, Thailand), known as MY MAYO, is a Thai artist whose practice explores inner stillness within the rhythms of everyday life. With a background in architecture, she constructs her paintings as lived-in spaces—where human presence, inner thoughts, and emotions are given room to quietly exist together.
Her work is rooted in personal experience, shaped by her upbringing in Samut Prakan, a coastal province in Thailand. Surrounded by fishing communities, open landscapes, and early encounters with Buddhist environments, she developed a sensitivity to space, stillness, and impermanence—elements that continue to inform her visual language.
A pivotal shift in her practice occurred in her late twenties, when she returned alone to the sea following a period of emotional transition. In this solitude, the landscape became more than a physical setting—it became an emotional terrain. The vastness and unpredictability of the ocean allowed her to confront uncertainty, rediscover independence, and reconnect with a sense of inner home.
Her paintings often depict human figures—alone, in pairs, or in quiet collectives. Through these scenes, she observes gestures, behaviors, and emotional states, often positioning herself as a distant, third-person presence. Influenced by her architectural training, she remains attentive to how people inhabit space, both physically and emotionally. Natural elements—trees and coastal landscapes drawn from lived environments—migrate into her canvases as anchors of memory and feeling. The recurring image of the coconut tree, in particular, carries personal significance, echoing childhood memories and a lasting connection to her father, who first inspired her to create.
Rather than seeking resolution, MY MAYO embraces the unresolved. Her brushwork remains intuitive, textured, and at times imperfect—allowing each painting to retain a sense of immediacy and emotional presence.
Her practice does not attempt to escape the complexities of life, but to remain with them. Through her work, she invites viewers to slow down, to sit with their own thoughts, and to recognize that uncertainty, solitude, and quiet joy can coexist within the same space.
